A short one today, which is usually how you know it’s the kind of update that was born from me using the product and going “wait, that can’t be right.”

First: Little progress bar updates you as files send.

Second: Better handling oflarge files that was timing out before!

And the usual tidy-up: if you cancel or decline from the phone mid-flight, the Mac side no longer sits on Sending… like nothing happened. Declined, cancelled, failed — Chute notices and gets out of the way. Plus a smoother tuck after a send. Little things.

Two updates two days in a row? Today’s update is a lesson in managing, and defying expectations. I was encouraged by my friend Jeremy to find a way to entirely hide the Apple System AirDrop sheet that pops up when using Chute. My first reaction was that that was a ludicrous ask; that I was lucky enough to have gotten the automation of the AirDrop process as fast and as smooth as it already is.

And yet, here I am today — humbly standing corrected. I have learned for the umpteenth time in my life that when there is a will (and a good plan) there’s a way. Chute is truly seamless now. The AirDrop sheet never shows up. If your phone is off, the nudge to tap the screen has been moved to the notch — otherwise same experience as ever. Only this time, with 100% more dazzle.

Chute 1.0 “Magnolia”

I’ve always dreamt of writing release notes, but I’ve never had a product to do it for.

Welcome to Chute 1.0, which I’m code naming “Magnolia” for no other reason than that it sounds like something you’d codename an app release and I was listening to Aimee Mann earlier when I was making these product updates.

Here’s what’s new:

  • Free Trials! Everyone who purchased v0.1 on launch day has received an email with an activation key. Everyone else gets to download the app and, after 7 days, experience the “Lock-em-out” UX flow I designed this morning. Fret not, license keys can be purchased on Gumroad and afford the user updates for life. Speaking of updates…
  • Over-the-air updates! From the menu, you can now click “Check for updates” and it does just that. I intend to ship new features and fixes early and often, so this was a no brainer.
  • We have patched this infuriating bug affecting some screens where the drop zone was a few pixels skewed off towards the left from the notch itself, absolutely shattering the illusion that the notch itself was expanding down to our Chute zone. Thank you to Chris, the eagle eyed early adopter who first pointed this out to me.
  • A much smoother onboarding experience, as if that was even possible. I saw a tweet that half of building a product is just designing a great onboarding. I get it.

It’s warm out and the sun is about to set here in Tbilisi, Georgia. I’m going to the gym, then coming back to take a couple calls.
